The Hospital Window Essays - James Dickey, Elevator, Line Poem

The Hospital Window The death of a loved one can put unimaginable stress on the loved ones of the deceased. This stress can make one's life chaotic and unpleasant for long periods of time if the mourners do not underezd the death. James Dickey, who believes, "poetry is the center of the creative wheel," wrote the poem, "The Hospital Window". The relationship between mourners and death becomes apparent in this "simple 54-line poem . . . about a parent's dying as a transformative experience, and the possibility that love conquers fear." The poem takes place on a city street adjacent to a large hospital. In "The Hospital Window", Dickey uses images which represent life and death to demonstrate that the death of a loved one can make one enter a surrealistic state, in which everyday occurrences appear to be heavenly; however, if one can overcome the death by underezding it, he can then return to a peaceful life. In the beginning of the poem, the images which distinguish life and death show that the speaker perceives normal events as spiritual after leaving his father's hospital room. Dickey's persona enters this state when he is on the hospital elevator. As the elevator brings him down to ground level, he remembers his father lying in his room above "in a blue light."(3) According to Gertrude Jobes, the color blue represents heaven and God. Therefore, its shining down on the speaker's father represents God's presence with his father. For any other observer, the light is obviously "shed by a tinted window,"(4) but the speaker's state of mind leads him to believe that the light shines from heaven. Once outside, the speaker turns to face the hospital. As he turns, he sees that "[each] window possesses the sun / As though it burned there on a wick."(13) To Jobes, the sun represents life. A candle wick burns for only a certain period of time, and then dies out. Therefore, the speaker believes that the reflection of the sun in the windows is actually his father's life. When the speaker reaches out to the sun, and "[waves], like a man catching fire,"(15) he tries to grab his father's life back. At that moment, the glare from the sun reflects in a certain way, making "all the deep-dyed windowpanes flash."(16) This flash, in the speaker's mind, is God reaching out for the father's soul. Also, the flash mocks the speaker's attempts at grabbing his father's life from the grips of death. Furthermore, the speaker visualizes God's presence by "all the white rooms / [turning] the color of Heaven."(18) To the speaker, the heavenly white color of the rooms represents purity and innocence, as described in Jobes, while others see merely white rooms. As the speaker studies the windows, he sees that all reflect "flames"(21), or the candles of the living still burning. It is then he realizes that his father's window is different. It reflects "the bright, erased blankness of nothing."(23) The flickering light visible in all of the other rooms is not visible in his father's room because he is dead. Once the speaker realizes his father is dead, he can start to overcome the death. In the middle of the poem, images representing life and death show how the speaker overcomes his father's death. After experiencing the madness of death, the speaker transitions from not believing in the death to realizing that his father is leaving him. First, the speaker realizes that his father's body remains in his room "[in] the shape of his death still living"(25). Death still living represents the father's dead body, with the soul still alive within. This thought causes a madness within the speaker because he realizes that his father's soul, oreverything he was, may remain within the corpse forever. Eventually, his father's soul "lifts [its] arms out of stillness at last"(31), causing the speaker to realize that his father's soul is leaving the body. The speaker "[turns] as blue as a soul / As the moment when I was born"(33-34) from the realization that his father will live on with him forever. This realization holds true because his father gave him life, so therefore his father will live on in his life. Additionally, the speaker

Each concept should be taught using math manipulatives and many concrete experiences. For instance, when teaching subtraction, use cereal, coins, jelly beans and provide many experiences with physically moving the objects and printing the number sentence (8 - 3 5). Then move to the worksheets. For word problems, students/learners should have an understanding of the computations required and then exposure to word problems are necessary to ensure they can use the computation in authentic situations.    When beginning fractions, many experiences with pizzas, fraction bars and circles should be used to ensure understanding. Fractions have two components for understanding, parts of a set (eggs, rows in gardens) and parts of the whole (pizza, chocolate bars etc.)   I have, who has, is a fun game to enhance learning.

A Discussion on Iron Deficiency

A Discussion on Iron Deficiency To be honest, I’m quite shocked that despite the very fact that iron deficiency is seen thus oftentimes, amazingly few individuals grasp pretty much concerning it. First of all, whats iron deficiency? because the name would counsel, it means the body doesn’t have enough of the mineral, iron, to try and do it’s job properly. Generally, the primary proof of this is often an occasional haemoglobin level, which suggests that the body doesnt have as several red blood cells because it is meant to own, or the quantity of haemoglobin in them is low. Not enough red blood cells or haemoglobin is termed anemia. Since there area unit variety of causes of anemia, tests area unit then run to rule out the a lot of frequent ones, and if they are available back with an occasional protein level (a check of body iron stores), we all know that theres a deficiency of iron, and that we decision the condition iron-deficiency anemia. Why is that this important? the work of your red blood cells is to move O from the lungsto each single cell within the body. thus if there’s not enough haemoglobin, then basically we’re depriving our bodies of O. O is important for life; its wont to convert fuel (food) into the energy required for each perform within the entire body. thus low haemoglobin = low O = suboptimal activity in each cell. Is it any marvel that symptoms of iron deficiency embrace fatigue, weakness, dizziness, issue concentrating, and a bunch of alternative potential problems? And what causes iron deficiency? Since iron is thus crucial for all times, the body doesn’t surrender th e mineral simply. the first reason for a deficiency is blood loss: menstruum, blood donation, injury, and gi hurt, which can occur with regular salicylate use or ulcers or for variety of alternative reasons. accumulated blood volume will increase desires for iron: pregnant ladies, athletes, and youngsters and teenagers having a growth spurt all have bigger blood volume and consequently have higher desires for iron. Another reason for iron deficiency is reduced absorption. There area unit some conditions which can cause reduced absorption, like Crohn’s or celiac disease; enteric surgery like viscus bypass; or taking medications that scale back abdomen acid, that is required for iron absorption. Another one, which can in all probability surprise, is high consumption of tea. Not coffee, just tea. All teas, black or flavoring, with the exception of Aspalathus linearis and Honeybush, contain tannins, and tannins interfere with iron absorption. As funny aside, throughout the time after I was learning bioscience in Washington, DC, my father was diagnosed with a iron deficiency anemia; he was shuttled around between doctors and blood specialists to undertake and puzzle out the reason for the deficiency to no avail. after I later detected of the case, the primary issue that popped into my mouth was â€Å"dad! You drink such a lot tea, after all you’re iron deficient.† He would simpl y drink 8-10 tiny (6oz) cups of tea throughout the day frequently. afterward day, he created a degree of not drinking tea for a time unit before or associate hour once his meals, and has not been anemic since. Finally, what does one do if you have got associate iron deficiency? you would like to dine in such some way that initial, youre overwhelming a lot of foods with iron, and second, that you just area unit increasing it’s absorption. Iron from animal sources is absorbed higher than iron from feeder sources. a number of the simplest animal sources embrace clams, liver, oysters, lean beef and turkey (dark meat). Of feeder sources, the simplest embrace soy merchandise (tofu, soybeans), white beans, lentils, fortified breakfast cereals, and roast pumpkin and Sesamum indicum seeds. To enhance absorption from feeder sources, its best to incorporate a supply of antioxidant within the same meal, as this victuals converts the iron to an improved. Examples embrace citrus fruits and juices, strawberries, bell peppers, kiwi, and lots of others. Another tip to urge a lot of iron in is to cook in forged iron kitchen utensil. particularly once you’re preparation one thing acidic (like p asta sauce), iron is leeched out of the pan into the food. Instant iron-fortified food! So iron is clearly necessary, however that actually doesn’t mean that everybody ought to begin supplementing his or her diets with iron. As i discussed before, the body doesn’t wish to get eliminate iron, thus if you’re not in an exceedingly deficiency state, taking associate iron supplement will simply cause iron-storage disease and toxicity. So, if you’re taking a multivitamin pill, it’s in all probability an honest plan to require one that doesn’t embrace any extra iron unless you recognize you would like it.

Accounting Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 8

Accounting - Essay Example Secondly, Haas School of business is consistently ranked among the top 20 business schools in the country and they cannot sustain this position if they lose their topnotch business faculty. The feasible and non-feasible options to resolve the situation again depends upon how things develop in the course of time and I will use the option based on priorities. My topmost priority will be to maintain the top 20 ranking of the School. In order to achieve that, I will increase the pay of the concerned faculty by 20% to retain them. The source of funds through which the payments are made is extremely important because certain rules and regulations will be attached to these funds regarding its application and disbursement. Moreover certain funds or grants would have been earmarked for a specific purpose or project and hence they cannot be used for any other purpose. But if the payments are not made from a grant or restricting financial source then such payments for a program can be made provided it is approved in the budget and within the overall budget of the organization. If the supplementary payments for faculty are for compensation for program and curriculum development then different set of rules should apply for processing payments for such kind of program. But if the faculty members have not completed any additional tasks to avail the compensation and it is not possible to determine who actually received the benefits from the program, then following are duties and responsibilities of the persons concerned. 2. Faculty members should be severely reprimanded and proper action should be also taken against them according university rules as they have not done any work for curriculum development program to deserve compensation. 3. University administrators should be made accountable for approving the idea, as they are bound to check the relevant records and

Comparing Bullets - Research Paper Example This can reveal the make of the bullet and what the bullet hit. It can also reveal the velocity of the bullet which can provide information on the type and power of the gun used. Additionally, the shape of the bullet can show the distance from which it was shot. Was the crime committed up close, or from across the street? Striations or other marks can indicate the type of weapon used in the commission of the crime. One possible defence at a criminal trial would be to suggest to the examiner that the bullet in question is a very popular one. Some bullets are manufactured in the hundreds of millions. They may not be as much of a signature as an examiner suggests. Some bullets are very common. It can be hard to trace them back to any particular gun. Examiners should generally be cautious about reading too much into a found bullet. It is unlikely to provide a complete blueprint to the

Narrative Essays Are a Great Read Essay Example for Free

Narrative Essays Are a Great Read Essay Narrative essays and Descriptive essays can be similar but they are different in nature. The narrative essay â€Å"I Want a Wife† is more compelling than the descriptive essay â€Å"Homeless† because the narrative essay has a point of view, uses humor and satire, and uses tone and language that can draw the reader in. â€Å"Narration is storytelling from the perspective of a narrator and the story may be true, false, imaginary, or a combination. A narration can be about past, present, or future events, and it can be short or the length of a novel† (Connell Sole, 2013, sec. 6.3). A narrative can draw in the audience by telling the reader the story just how it happened or how they pictured it to be without losing someone in thought because they may not understand what they mean when they are using words to describe it a certain way. â€Å"Description is a pattern of writing that can be defined as painting pictures with words† (Connell Sole, 2013, sec. 6.4). A descriptive essay uses very expressive words to describe specific details. See more: what is narrative writing The reader will have to use the five sense in order to understand what the writer is trying to convey and may get lost especially if the reader doesn’t understand one of those descriptive words. The two essays in this paper that are being compared and contrasted are â€Å"Homeless† by Anna Quindlen and â€Å"I Want a Wife† by Judy Brady. Both essays are being told by the author but through someone else’s eyes but on what the author sees. The beginning paragraph from the narrative essay â€Å"I Want a Wife† reads, â€Å"Not too long ago a male friend of mine appeared on the scene fresh from a recent divorce. He had one child, who is, of course, with his ex-wife. He is looking for another wife. As I thought about him while I was ironing one evening, it suddenly occurred  to me that I, too, would like to have a wife. Why do I want a wife† (Brady, 1971)? This paragraph started off the essay with author’s point of view because she too is a wife. The author was able to identify this by what she does as a wife, how she acted and how she is treated. This can also be the point of view of a man because some men may feel that this is what a wife should do or how a wife should act or maybe someone else who is a wife, because it’s what they do. She made the essay seem like a wife is such a huge deal and that they have such a big job to complete throughout each day. This essay makes the reader stop and think about if this is the way they want their wife to be or if they want to be this way if they are a wife. The descriptive essay â€Å"Homeless†, the author tells her point of view because of a homeless lady she wanted to ask questions to. She perceived her point of view about homeless people from a portrait the lady showed her and what she sees when she looks at the lady and the picture. Both essays have a point a view a reader may agree or disagree with. Not everyone sees a wife as a person who does everything for the household, such as cook all meals, clean the whole house, take care of the kids, and take care of the man. Back in 1971 when the essay was written this may have held true, but in 2014 there are house-holds where the woman is the bread winner and the man will stay home and take care of everything. There are also other relationships where the house hold is 50-50. The husband and wife share duties. As far as homeless people, someone’s point of view may be different than when the author said: â€Å"People find it curious that those without homes would rather sleep sitting up on benches or huddled in doorways than go to shelters† (Quindlen, n.d. para. 7). That was her point of view of what she thinks other people think but in reality, the homeless people may not be able to get shelter so they have no choice but to sleep on benches. With these two essays, the point of view is stronger in the narrative essay beca use most people are wives, or they have a wife and can see this essay as true. The descriptive essay, not everyone is homeless or they may not be around homeless people or know how they interact so they may not understand the point the author is trying to make. The tone of â€Å"I Want a Wife† is written in a humorous, ironic mood. This is what makes this essay enjoyable to read and it’s not boring to the reader. The essay has a â€Å"sarcastic tone which is produced when someone uses heave-handed verbal irony. Verbal irony occurs  when one expresses the opposite of what one actually means (Connell Sole, 2013). The narrative essay is also of great humor and satire. To any woman reader and maybe some men, they may look at this essay and laugh. The reader may sense the sarcasm in the author’s words. For example, the author says â€Å"If, by chance, I find another person more suitable as a wife than the wife I already have, I want the liberty to replace my present wife with another one† (Brady, 1971, para. 8). This paragraph alones makes you mad but makes you laugh. The whole essay in itself is also written in sarcasm. The writer depicts what a wife should be but is sarcastic in her approach of how she writes it. She always started off with â€Å"I want a wife who will†, and then talks about what she would want her wife to do if she wanted a wife, and how a wife should act. If you did not know the author, you would have th  ought this was written by a man. At the end of the essay, Brady (1971) states â€Å"My God, who wouldn’t want a wife?† shows that this whole essay was of great irony and satire because she talks about what she wants in a wife when she is a wife. This quoted sentence shows exaggeration, just like the rest of the essay. There was no irony or sarcasm or anything to make me laugh in the descriptive essay â€Å"Homeless†. Because of the nature of the essay, there wouldn’t be any humor or satire since it could be considered a sad essay. The authors tone in â€Å"Homeless† is very serious, yet tranquil. It is serious because the subject is also very serious subject, but serene because she knows that there is a solution for these problem s. Quindlen uses this tone to get through to the reader in order to deliver the purpose. The tone is also sad because of the problems of homelessness in the world today. The reader may feel a sense of sympathy when reading this essay because it can be controversial. There is some hyperbole language the author is using in homeless like: â€Å"It was like a thousand houses in a hundred towns, not suburb, not city, but somewhere in between, with aluminum siding and a chain-link fence, a narrow driveway running up to a one-car garage, and a patch of backyard (Quindlen, n.d. para. 2). Brady also uses different figurative language such as exaggeration and repetitiveness in her essay. Through the language you often felt the emotion of the essay especially if you are a wife because you may think about if you have done the things she is stating a wife does. This essay has an emotion appeal to it. It â€Å"has a purpose, its honest and not attempting to mislead, and not used just for  effect or for gratuitous reasons† (Connell Sole, 2013, sec. 7.3). It is not making personal attacks on wives, but showing how a wife is treated as such and how they are not appreciated. The narrative essay gave a more clear understanding as to the point the author was trying to get a cross. The narrative essay also used a descriptive writing pattern. The language was carefully and particularly chosen and it also evoked emotions to the reader. The narrative essay was of great humor and satire but it also made you think about life as a wife, as to where the descriptive essay was a serious essay that talked about a world issue and the attempt to take action to solve that problem. It lacked the senses a descriptive should have. There was no emotion and no feelings relating to the topic, because the descriptive essay was more of a journalistic essay that talked about problems that needed to be solved. It did not have many words to paint the picture of how homeless people live and what they look like, or how they smell how they get by day to day. The narrative essay had this creative tension that kept the reader interested in what a man or another woman may think of what a wife could be. It kept the writer of this essay interested because she is too, a wife. References Brady, J. (1971). I want a wife. energy :: essays research papers

First off I would like to Congratulate Ms. President on your second term, I have always supported you and what you think is best for this country. With you as president I feel that this country will be a lot safer and it will be better for the people. I also want to take the time to thank you Ms. President on picking me to help lead us out of this energy problem we are going threw. As the headman of the department of energy, I will lead us into a bright new future for this country. My plan will save us million, who knows maybe even billions down the line!   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The problem that we face know is that we are running out of oil, and fast. Oil has been a big part of our energy over the last 200 years, and it has worked great, by heating our houses and running out cars. But now with oil running out fast we need to turn to a knew source of energy. One that will be more efficient, one that will be clean, one that doesn't require to be thrown away after use, one that we can make free to the public at one point, one that we can use for the rest of out lifetime.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The sun has been a big par of life, no matter where you come from or what you believe in the sun is the most important thing to us. Without this big ball of fire, there wont be any light, crops wound not be able to grow, and those who eat the crops would die because they would have no food, and those who eat the animals that eat the crops would die because there wound be any animals left, and life as we know it would come to an end. This shows you how strong the sun actually is, it has the power to end life. The sun also creates so much energy on a bright, sunny day, the sun shines approximately 1,000 watts of energy per square meter of the planet's surface. What I am proposing is that we use the sun to run the United States of America. This will be a long plan and it will take a long time to complete its goal but with patience, and a good team to work with we can pull this plan together.
